My assignments as external project leader varies. Typically I'm hired as a consultant to lead an Active Directory project together with internal managers and IS/IT personnel. In compliance with business objectives and policies, we're then taking measures to increase return on investment and efficiency within the IT environment. Sometimes the project lead is about providing adequate training for selected groups from the organization.
Due to short-sightedness, IT projects sometimes misses out on basic goals. Important parts of the foundation within my projects are:

- Start with a human, not a technical, perspective
- Increase return on investment (ROI) and efficiency
- Consider business needs, requirements and wishes
- Measure progress within different areas and setup priorities
- Don't be too theoretical: Honor experience and Best Practices
- Include ITIL® and MOF with reason, meaning where it adds value
- See opportunities, but also point out known problems in OS and software
